Online Chinese Classes With Taiwanese Teachers: TutorABC

Online Chinese Classes with Teachers from Taiwan

Although we have more resources to teach our kids Chinese than our parents did, the options are still pretty limited. There are many online Chinese classes, but the teachers and programs are often based in China and teach Simplified Chinese. Finding online Chinese classes with Taiwanese teachers can be tough.

Sure, we have tons of Chinese shows to watch on Disney+ and Netflix, but you don’t always get to choose whether the Mandarin is Putonghua or Guoyu. When you’re raising kids in the U.S. like me, you can’t always be picky. Still, you’re just happy the kids hear Chinese at all.

This means that when we speak Mandarin, our accent can be a mix of Taiwan and China. And I’ll admit, it hurts when I speak Mandarin, and someone in Taiwan would ask, “Where are you from? You don’t sound Taiwanese!” I’m happy my kids speak Mandarin at all, but as a Taiwanese American, I also want them to sound Taiwanese.

That’s why I was happy to find TutorABC’s online Chinese program with Taiwanese teachers. Their program is designed specifically for children growing up outside Mandarin-speaking countries. TutorABC offers Traditional Chinese characters and Zhuyin, which makes it a top choice for overseas Taiwanese families.

What is TutorABC

TutorABC is an online language-learning platform headquartered in Taipei, Taiwan. They offer live, one-on-one Chinese classes for children and adults. Teachers hold TCSOL or IPA certifications and train to teach heritage learners and students whose first language isn’t Chinese.

TutorABC develops its own curriculum through an in-house team, with lessons designed to support students as they build their Chinese skills. The company also brings decades of teaching experience to its programs, with millions of lessons delivered.

I appreciate is that I can set TutorABC’s interface to English. For parents like me who can’t read Chinese, it’s much easier to navigate the platform, understand the program options, and manage our kids’ classes without having to figure everything out in Chinese. One thing to note is that they do not have a parent portal. You have to set up an account for each child with a different email address.

Why TutorABC for Taiwanese Families?

For Taiwanese families raising children outside Taiwan, finding Chinese classes that reflect our language and culture can be a challenge. Many online programs teach Mandarin, but not all offer Taiwanese teachers or instruction in Zhuyin and Traditional Chinese characters.

Online Teachers from Taiwan

TutorABC stands out because it offers online Chinese classes with Taiwanese teachers. Having a teacher from Taiwan can give children more exposure to Taiwanese pronunciation, expressions, and everyday language. For heritage learners who hear a mix of Mandarin at home, in school, and through cartoons, that extra exposure can be helpful.

Zhuyin and Traditional Chinese

TutorABC teaches Traditional Chinese characters with Zhuyin instruction. Zhuyin (注音), also called Bopomofo, is the phonetic system commonly used to teach children how to read Chinese in Taiwan. This is something that overseas Taiwanese parents often ask for.

The only online Chinese program with CCCC certification

TutorABC is the only online Chinese learning platform with officially certified CCCC learning materials.

What is CCCC? The Children’s Chinese Competency Certification is a Chinese proficiency assessment developed in Taiwan for children learning Chinese as a second language. It assesses listening and reading through everyday situations and has three levels to help track children’s progress.

The assessment is designed for children ages 7–12 whose first language isn’t Chinese, including kids growing up in places like the U.S. While not necessary, a certification can be a goal you and your child are working towards.
