Word books are one of the easiest ways to introduce Chinese at home, especially for non-native-speaking parents.

When I first started teaching my son Mandarin, I didn’t know the Chinese words for many everyday objects.

My First 100 Words by Little Sunshine Publishing was created with a mother’s love, and it shows on every page. The illustrations are warm and realistic, and each word is shown in Chinese, pinyin, and English

I miss those quiet moments when my babies would flip through their word books, pointing out familiar pictures. Those moments may seem small, but they are easy wins that help language take root.

For Asian immigrant communities, Lunar New Year is more than a celebration, it’s part of our identity. For our kids, it connects them to their roots through old traditions, while honoring new ones shaped by our lives here.

Growing up in the U.S., we didn’t celebrate Lunar New Year. When I became a mom, I realized how disconnected I felt from our culture, and now we’re learning together.

Children’s books like Lunar New Year by Isabelle Engler are an easy way to introduce traditions and heritage. The illustrations spark conversations and help build vocabulary.

Today I’m on the hunt for dragon eggs! Just kidding! they’re actually the sweetest fruit you’ll ever eat!

These are Custard apples, also known as sugar apples. In Mandarin they are called 釋迦 (Shìjiā) and in Taiwanese they are called sek-kia.

The fruit has a soft pudding like texture and tastes like a super sweet blend of tropical fruits.

Fun fact:
Custard apples are considered a specialty fruit of Taiwan, but did you know that they are actually from central America?

I share books and resources like these to help raise bilingual kids and reconnect with culture in small, meaningful ways. One of my favorites is Benson Shum’s English picture books for Chinese holidays. His stories beautifully capture what it feels like to grow up celebrating Chinese holidays between cultures.

We don’t have family nearby, so Lunar New Year is usually a quiet celebration for us. We make dumplings and our own decorations. Somewhere along the way, this became our tradition.

Can you believe you can play with Capybaras in Taipei?

Capybaras are all the rage in Taiwan. Want to visit this adorable and super playful capybara? Make a reservation for Capybara House in Xinyi, and after your meal you can have a 30-minute play date with their 3 friendly mascots.

We ended up spending about NT$500 ($15.78 USD/20.26 SGD) per person for 2 adults and 2 kids. The shared pot charge for kids is only NT$150!

They offer the basic hot pot fixings and ice cream for dessert. Kids ate so much and we all left stuffed. I thought the hot pot was pretty good.

Did you know TPE has free massage chairs?

Taipei Taoyuan Airport (TPE) has free massage chairs tucked into the relaxation zones. We found them near Gate B7, right in front of Kung Fu Massage.

Just stop by the pharmacy next door and grab a token from the tray at the register.

The kids happily enjoyed their free 15-minute massage, and I treated myself to a much-needed 15-minute deep tissue shoulder massage at Kung Fu Massage.

Looking for a legal wild hot spring in Taipei? ♨️

This serene spot on Yangmingshan is a man-made creek fed by natural hot spring water and is just a 10-minute, easy walk. You can soak while surrounded by nature and birdsong.

We went on a weekday and had the entire place to ourselves. We loved it so much, the kids asked to come back the very next day.

📍 Zi Ming Creek Trail｜紫明溪步道

🚗 How to get there from Beitou MRT station:
• 20 min by car
• 30 min by bus

We took an Uber up the mountain for NT$250, then took the bus back down.

🚌 S9 bus goes directly up and down the mountain from Beitou.
🚙 Driving is also easy, there’s a parking lot available.

Looking for kid-friendly places in Taipei?

This is the biggest playground we’ve ever been to! Slides in every shape and size. Pro tip: the ice cream truck sells sleds for NT$150. Since we don’t live nearby, the owner kindly let us return the sled and swap it for ice cream. Such a nice guy.

There are zip lines, climbing structures, a huge water play area in the summer, and even a ride on train.

The park does has security, toilets, a breastfeeding room, and a few food trucks.

Hot tip: bring something bright so your kids can spot you easily. I had an orange umbrella, which was perfect and gave me some shade too.

The playground is just 4 MRT stops from Taipei. After you’re done, you can hop on the MRT for three stops to Sanhe Night Market for dinner.
